OPM Authority: Your official FERS retirement annuity will be calculated and determined solely by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Social Security: FERS retirement is a three-part system: (1) FERS Basic Annuity, (2) Social Security, and (3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). This calculator focuses on the Basic Annuity and the FERS Supplement. We strongly encourage you to review your official Social Security Statement at ssa.gov to obtain your personalized Social Security retirement estimate.

Taxable Income: Both your FERS Basic Annuity/pension payment and your Social Security retirement benefits are considered taxable income by the IRS when you receive them in retirement. Depending on your total retirement income, up to 85% of your Social Security benefit may be subject to federal income tax. Some states also tax these income sources. Consult a qualified tax professional for personalized tax planning guidance.

FERS Supplement: The Special Retirement Supplement (SRS) is paid by OPM — not the Social Security Administration — and is subject to an earnings test if you work after retirement. The supplement ends at age 62 regardless of when you claim Social Security. It is also considered taxable income.

High-3 Salary: Your actual High-3 average is calculated by OPM from your official pay records. The estimate used here may differ from your actual High-3. Always verify with your HR office or OPM.
